7000 gamer points and counting

Sorry had to mention it.
Thanks to "The Darkness" I'm another step closer to the 10K mark, and I reckon with BioShock, Stranglehold and Halo 3 around the corner I'm going to enjoy trying to reach it!

Don't get the point!?

Don't get the POINT!?

You've got 480 points! ;-)

It's about achivement! The more points you get the more you have achieved!
Isn't that what life's all about? ;-)

I like gaming for gaming, i dont see the value in amassing points.. that i dont seem to be able to do anything with.. maybe i could trade 2000 points for a toaster or something?

Im not having a go or anything, honestly! i just don't see the value in it, i play.. i have some fun, i switch it off.

unfortunately sony is headed this direction too

Fair enough.

Just for me part of the enjoyment of 360 games is the achivement system.
As with any any game scores and highscore tables can often play a big part in adding longevity and a general incentive to completing various goals.
What would be the point Geometry Wars if you didn't get points for shooting stuff?
It's just adds an extra dimension to games.

Ah, no i completely get high score tables, have done since manic miner on the spectrum, i almost make my eyes bleed trying to catch lee's score on geometry wars, its just this 'global' points i dont get.

It doesnt work so well.. Your not a better gamer because you have more of these points, you just play more games! i just question there value.. hence why i only have 480 of them!

Thing is, you can't actively avoid getting points.
Yes, collectively the points are pretty meaningless but individually they are arguably as meaningful as any "in game point"
The fact that you can drill down to the details of each game makes it allot more interesting e.g. 10 point for "Pacifism" in GW or (my personal favourite) the 30 points for "A Dish Best Served Cold" defeating General RAAM on HardCore in GOW!
The fact that achievements like that are recorded for posterity is awesome.
Maybe I'm missing the point but for me gaming is as much about competition with others as it is about just enjoyment of the game.

True enough, maybe i just lack ambition!

Lol! ;-)

Maybe I'll believe you when I can get half your Geometry Wars score!

Ben I think you should take a month break now, as I have been without my xbox for a month now, it's only fair you know... ;)

Phoned MS tonight and my xbox is fixed just have to wait for them to send it back now!

Mal I think the achievements are a good thing, I usually pick them up just playing the game, some a stupidly hard to get though but it presents a challenge. Makes games last longer for me which can only be a good thing.

Going to have to nail GRAW2 and Forza 2 when i get my box back, I'm not letting you win this easily Ben! Bring it on! :)
